100% Casein Protein (Optimum Nutrition)

Sometimes slower is better - especially when it comes to the rate of protein digestion. While rapid protein absorption is desirable immediately before or after exercise, delayed release is probably more beneficial throughout the remainder of the day.

Casein proteins are pH sensitive and gel in the acidic environment of the stomach. As a result, it can take more than twice as long for caseins to be broken-down into their amino acid sub components than whey and other proteins. Because of these unique "time-released" qualities, caseins are aptly described as being anti-catabolic, or muscle-protecting, proteins.

Vanilla

Compared to other flavors of ON's 100% Casein, Vanilla casein was a finer texture, which made mixing a tad easier and not so thick even when mixed in milk, but still slow sipping like molasses.

Mixed in milk, the taste was pretty bad, a very unnatural vanilla taste. Comparable to ON's vanilla whey, but more of a tang to it. In water, the taste was downright horrendous.

Great to mix with other proteins as the flavor can be masked and overpowered by other flavors pretty well. Ingredients are great, so no complaints there. Solid casein source that's convenient.

Cookies and Cream

Taste is AMAZING in milk, by far my favorite ON flavor, but is not great at all in water. In milk it mixes a lot thicker, and with lesser milk, it can be difficult to mix thoroughly, or drink it all out the cup without it staying in there. To describe the taste, it is very much like an Oreo milkshake flavor. Being so thick it is fairly filling even on its own.

One thing about cookies and cream is that if adding any to a PWO shake or in combination with another flavor whey, cookies and cream is fairly overpowering, and other flavors can be easily lost, skewed or ruined:p

I recommend this product for anyone looking for a casein source that tastes great and needs it in a snap.

So I'm pretty sure I'm the last person on Earth to try ON's Casein. But that's ok, because I was one of the first to try the new Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor. In spite of my excitement though, it seems I would have been better off abstaining. Perhaps it was because I had visions of UP2.0 dancing in my head, but this did not do justice to its name.

In water, this tasted fairly chocolatey, but there was zero PB taste. It was very close in flavor and consistency to Dymatize's 12 Hour Fudge Brownie. Mixed up thick, but that's to be expected from casein. Oddly, the PB flavor elected to make an appearance when mixed with milk, but this still wasn't mind-blowing, it was solid though. This tastes best when mixed with some XF peanut flavoring, but I feel like I really shouldn't have to go that far.

optium nutrition makes a great casein, i have used the vanilla flavor. the shake mixes up much thicker than whey, but still has a pretty good taste, ecspecially in milk. this is a great protein to take before bed, and, as far as i know, is the only 100% casein protein on the market. a casein shake before bed was a simple way to get some extra protein into my diet, and i believe it really haelped me put on some pounds during my bulk. the anti catabolic nature of casein also hepled me recover from workouts and not be as tired or sore the next day. this is also a great protein to take any other time of the day when you know you wont be eating for a while since the protein digests much slower. i would reccommend it to anyone looking for a night time protein.

After trying it for the first time, i need to say that i totally disagree with all you people against chocolate supreme taste. I decided to give em a try to the chocolate supreme and cookies and cream, i read lots of bad feedback on taste thing, but i didnt care and went for them.

Chocolate Supreme

8/10 The taste surprised me, i thought it would be a nasty clumpy thing but thats not the case for me, i really enjoy it. The mixability is decent but you need a shaker or a blender, the consistency is thick but nothing out of the extraordinary, at least with 10 oz water. I prefer this flavor over ON 100% Whey Double rich chocolate, which i can't swallow due to i hate it, a thing the many users dont report, thats why taste terms are individual.

Cookies and Cream
9/10 It doesnt taste like real cookies and cream but the flavor its very good, you can enjoy it, it tastes more like a vanilla cream shake with just a slight taste of cookies, much more better than its whey version. Consistency and mixability is thick without a problem of clumps or anything, similar to the chocolate version.

Out of two, i go with Cookies and Cream, but you can't go wrong with either. Next try will be Banana Cream and Vanilla and ill keep you posted about them.

I'm sure glad I purchased this at a nice discount, because this is quite a product...

Taste - I've only tried Vanilla, but I was thoroughly unimpressed with the taste. If you haven't had pure casein protein, be forewarned that casein does not taste quite as good as most wheys.

Ease of Mixing - This is where things get ugly...really ugly. If your one desire is to experience extreme protein clumping, then by all means, BUY THIS! If you're just a regular guy armed with only utensil, cup and water, then this should be avoided at all costs.

Value - As far as casein proteins go, this is pretty reasonably priced. If you happen to have an industrial blender and a few gallons of Da Vinci flavoring, I'm sure you could make this stuff taste wonderful. Otherwise, you may wish to check out some other caseins *cough* Evopro *cough*.

First of all this product isn't a fat loss product. Neways... lets get to the point. I really like this product Casein protein. I bought it because I needed a product that would rush protein into my system during my period of sleep and Casein is the best for that. Casein is slow absorbing unlike whey.. I stick with my whey pre-workout or post-workout when I need protein rushed into my system immediately. Lets get back to the casein.. This product works great and I noticed when I take it before bed or right in the morning I am able to recover quicker. Overall taking casein protein is a great way to recover and repair your muscles and to keep your body in an anabolic state at all times. Also for 24 bucks you can't go wrong. The only bad difference of Casein from whey is that Casein taste isn't so great, but if that isn't an issue for you then I suggest you buy it if you want to maximize your training and results.

In Optimum Nutrition’s Casein I bought their Banana cream flavor. With milk it tasted like the best banana pudding ever! The taste alone makes this product worth the buy. Cheaper than whey blends, at 40 bucks for 4 lbs, it’s a great deal. This tub lasted me over a month, taking servings about twice a day. It mixed real good in shaker cups and the magic bullet – but like most proteins didn’t mix too great when stirred. Left it being all clumpy with pockets of dry protein in some gulps. Great amount of protein per serving too, so great before my bedtime to keep that anabolism going during the night. As far as Optimum Nutrition’s Casein compares to other brands is that ON’s stuff is cheaper, tastes better and has an overall quality only ON can give. ON’s stuff is time tested as worth the buy, and I’m just another advocate of their stuff, its great!
