Platinum PRE- (Optimum Nutrition)

Pre-workout supplementation isn't new. What's exciting about new PLATINUM PRE- is ON's commitment to using safe, effective ingredients in amounts that are clearly listed on the Facts Panel for all to see. There's no marketing hype in this product. This pre-workout formula is 100% business, just like you've come to expect from ON.

Of course, you also expect ON to provide more, and this Platinum-level pre-workout powder is no exception. In addition to intense energy and focus, the formula supports training performance with beta-alanine and citrulline. A novel fruit extract supports metabolism and a unique PhytoBlend completes the package. Those who demand more depend on Optimum Nutrition.

Raspberry Lemonade
Considering the fact that, at least according to its own advertising, Optimum Nutrition is leading the supplement market, it seems odd that it would take the company this long to produce a pre-workout. Perhaps most surprising, at least according to me, is that the product is so bad. ON could have (and in some senses seems to have) looked to other successful products and tried to emulate those good qualities. And while the formula bears the imprint of pre-workouts that work, Platinum Pre does not work for me.

I took ON's advice and went with the half-serving first to assess my tolerance. At 200 mg of caffeine, 1.6 grams of beta alanine and 125 mg of capsicum extract per half-serving, I figured I would get a good sense for the power of this product. That impression was incorrect. I really was hesitant to take the full scoop given the 400 mg of caffeine but I was a fan of actually getting the full beta alanine dose so I did take the second half about 15 minutes after the first. Perhaps that was too long a gap, because I really didn't feel much of anything. I felt distracted during the workout, very little focus, and very little energy. Luckily I had a protein bar with me so I had that intra, which is something I never have to do normally for energy, let alone with a pre-workout. Pumps and vascularity were about normal, perhaps a bit enhanced over what I usually have. Didn't feel like I had extra stamina or endurance, more like less than normal. It's almost as if I just crashed instantly without any added energy.

The flavor was okay, although I can't really think of any Raspberry Lemonade supplement I've had that tasted worse. This was well below the standard set by Cytofuse, but obviously the profile differences make them uncomparable. It was not unpleasant, but not great. Sadly, the best feature here was the mixability, which was smooth and even.

Perhaps a longer trial with this product would provide superior results but as of now, I wouldn't spend more money on it.
