PowerBar has been slow to enter the protein market and now they have finally caught up with the reduced sugar movement. Unfortunately, the Reduced Sugar version of their ProteinPlus bars suffers from the same problems as the original - bland flavoring and a nutritional profile that is less impressive than other offerings. The flavoring here doesn't feel natural but has more of a chemical taste and an overwhelming blandness that consumers of standard PowerBars will be familiar with. It isn't terrible, but considering what other companies smaller than PowerBar have done with flavoring, this is disappointing.

Also, the nutritional profile, which isn't too bad on its own, just pales in comparison to other brands. Each bar has 270 calories, 22 grams of protein, 9 grams of fat and 30 grams of carbohydrates. But while many other protein bars - particularly the low sugar/carbohydrate versions - have a hefty amount of fiber, this bar contains just 1 gram. The sugar content is also just 1 gram, but there are 17 grams of sugar alcohols per bar, which may make for an unpleasant digestive experience for some people. PowerBar does provide a blend of three proteins - whey, casein and soy - so that is a plus, and there are some vitamins and minerals to enjoy as well. Again, not a completely lackluster product, but it isn't on par with what other brands are offering.

Although most of PowerBar's offerings focus on endurance athletes and massive quantities of carbohydrates, the company does realize that catering to other athletes could be advantageous as well. The Reduced Sugar ProteinPlus bar is their most bodybuilder-friendly offering, with 22 grams of protein per 270-calorie bar. That's not too bad as far as protein bars go, although many tend to have more protein with that amount of calories. Of the 30 grams of carbohydrates, only one gram comes from sugar, which is quite out of character for PowerBar products. Of course, there is still just one gram of fiber and 17 grams of sugar alcohol, so it's not a perfect profile. Each bar does contain a random assortment of vitamins and minerals as well as 9 grams of fat, 4 grams of which are saturated. The flavor is on par with probably Met-RX and other middle-of-the-line offerings, as it tastes good but not great. One particularly annoying aspect is that, while the bar itself doesn't seem dry, it leaves your mouth tasting dry. No cardboard consistency and not overly chewy, but not a top choice.
